Heteronormativity

Heteronormativity is the concept that heterosexuality is considered the "default", "normal" or "desirable" orientation within our society. Heteronormativity manifests in many ways, such as:
- Assuming that people are straight until told otherwise
- Assuming that within same sex couples one partner must take on a more traditionally feminine role and the other a more masculine role.
- Discounting the validity of non-nuclear families / believing a child needs a male and a female parent.
